After a decade of living in Europe my husband and I moved to Melbourne in 2004 for one final chapter of city life. Our relatively short time in Melbourne reinforced the fact that it wasn’t a change of city that we was calling us but in fact our dream of country life on the farm. A pre-christmas scouting trip in 2006 led us to find the farm that we had talked about and dreamed about almost 15 years earlier whilst sitting sipping Bavarian beer in Munich’s finest Beer Gardens. We couldn’t resist the magic and 2007 saw us leave the city behind and put down roots here at Merlewood in Mirboo North. Nestled in the strzlecki ranges who couldn’t help but fall in love with this beautiful country that reminded me so much of my Scottish homeland.
Fast-forward a decade later and we are living our dream – breeding beautiful black angus stud cattle that make us smile each and every day.
2017 was a milestone year for us as we hosted our Inaugural On-Farm Autumn Bull Sale; a dream becoming a reality. We look forward to bringing leading industry black angus stud bulls to breeders of premium angus beef cattle throughout Victoria each and every year with our annual on-property black angus stud bull sale which we will hold in March of each year.
As we grow black angus cows and heifers will also be available for sale too – mainly through private treaty.
We are excited to be an integral part of the Gippsland Breeding Bowl.
Merlewood Angus Manifesto:
Animal welfare is our first priority. Our animals come first and their wellbeing will under no circumstances be compromised for profit.
We consider it an honour and a privilege – humbling even – to be welcomed into the intimate daily life of our beautiful black Angus cattle and share this sacred space.
About Merlewood Angus:
Merlewood Angus was established in 2009 with the purchase of 20 females from leading industry respected black Angus studs and we now have 245 registered female breeders.
Embryo purchases in the early years led not only to the inclusion of some excellent maternal bloodlines in our breeding program but also introduced us to Willie Milne who went on to become an integral part of our breeding advisory program. With over half a century of experience with cattle, Willie has helped us fast track our genetics advising us on our embryo and A.I. programs along with sire selection and foundation females.
Continuous review of the data we collect and collate is paramount to our successful breeding program. Strong genetics combined with exemplary animal husbandry and strict structural assessment allows Merlewood Angus to breed black Angus cattle that shine. We are truly grateful to have Willie Milne as an integral part of our team.
In a nutshell Merlewood Angus is all about the continuous improvement of land, cattle and people as we practice heart focused farming. Animal Care, Land Care, People Care – that’s the heart of Merlewood Angus.
“We Farm with Love.”
Merlewood Angus Mission Statement:
To breed beautiful black Angus cattle that are a pleasure to handle whilst maintaining the structural correctness and beef yield that the commercial farmer requires to turn a profit.
To leave the land in a much better condition than we purchased it. We see ourselves as caretakers of the land for both the cattle who currently graze the pastures and for all future generations. We feed the soil and pastures with natural healthy goodies which ensures our cattle are happy and healthy.
