There were both new and return buyers at Redbank Angus’ second on-property sale at Pine Park, Cowra, on Angus 23.
The Connolly family offered 38 bulls and sold 37 at auction to a top of $18,000 to average $8730. The remaining lot sold immediately afterwards.
The top-priced bull, Redbank Chisum T188, by S Chisum 255, sold to Victorian stud Merlewood Angus, Mirboo North.
The July-2022 drop weighed 912 kilograms with a 41.5 centimetre scrotal. The bull’s estimated breeding values included +3,2 for rump fat and +46 for docility, ranking him in the top 10 per cent of the breed for both traits.
Willie Milne, Merlewood Angus breed consultant, travelled to the sale to view the bull and said it was his first time buying from the stud.
Mr Milne said the bull was what the industry was looking for and was very good value for money.
He favoured his carcase, doing ability, feet and docility. He noted the dam, Premier Y301 Dream K62, was also a good female line.
“It’s pretty hard to find stud sires of this calibre,” he said.
“I’m very, very happy to get him.”
The second top-priced bull, Redbank Patent T165, sold for $15,000 to online bidder Bailey Property and Livestock, Singleton, for an undisclosed buyer.
By Woodhill Patent and out of a Millah Murrah Flower C69 daughter, he ranked in the top 10pc for calving ease direct and calving ease daughters with +10.4 and +9.3, respectively.
Another Chisum son, Redbank Chisum T211, out of Millah Murrah Flower G41, sold for $14,000 to Raglan Pastoral Company, West Wallsend.
Elders Bathurst paid $12,000 on behalf for Redbank Three Rivers T230, Ellingson Three Rivers 8062 and out of Redbank Mittagoing N38.
The bull ranked in the top 10pc for 200-, 400- and 600-day growth and for carcase weight, along with the top 20pc for intramuscular fat.
Bath Creek Pastoral, Perthville, selected three bulls to a $12,000 top to average $9333.
Its top bull was Redbank Paratrooper T196, by Millah Murrah Paratrooper P15, which ranked in the top 10pc for growth, mature cow weight, carcase weight and gestation length.
Volume buyers included T Mendham Contracting Service, Hobbys Yards, which bought six bulls to an equal top of $9000 to average $7667.
Tim Mendham and his son, Sam, said it was their first time buying from Redbank. The operation runs about 500 breeders and also trades cattle.
The pair were mostly chasing growth traits.
South Coast Livestock, Bega, also selected six bulls to a $10,000 top to average $8500.
Redbank stud principal Shaun Connolly said it was a good result, especially to see return buyers along with some new faces.
